How can I darken/stain furniture that already has a polyurethane finish?

There are varnish's nowadays that are both varnish and stain, I'm not saying it will work, but I'd try lightly sanding one of your items needing staining, like a hidden corner of a unit that's not seen. It could save you a hell of a lot of work, probably take a couple of coats.
